CHAPTER 20

We were all teenagers once. That’s what I told myself after the incident behind the alien diner. Cat and I were trying to sleep. We had made a small fire in a barrel behind the restaurant as the sun went down. We kept the flames low and heated some water for a meal of chili-mac made from emergency rations. It was bland and pasty, but hot food in your stomach is a luxury that we often take for granted. After eating we made sure the fire was out. It was cold in Roswell a day or two before New Year’s. To be honest, the days had sort of run together.

So, we went to bed early and planned to be up early. Not because it was easier to travel in daylight so much as it was difficult to sleep very long in the cramped sleeping bag. It always felt good to stretch out after a long day of slow travel and constant worry. I would lay on my back, my right hip crammed against the wheel well and our supplies. Cat would lay on her side next to me, her head on my chest, her wounded leg on top so that the pressure wouldn’t make the pain worse.

We were long out of Vicodin by that point and nearly out of ibuprofen, but each night I convinced her to take a couple. She needed the rest; it was the best time for healing. And even though the wound itself had closed up, it was still painful, with plenty of deeper healing needing to take place. The muscles around the wound often cramped at night and spasmed, making sleep for both of us difficult. I could complain, but it was that light sleep and uncomfortable conditions that saved our lives.

We heard the locals coming. They didn’t know we were behind the building and went inside to get out of the cold. I heard them laughing and yelling. By the time I untangled myself from Cat and the sleeping bag, they had decided to bring in the barrel we had built a fire in. They probably had the same idea. I was kneeling behind the driver’s seat, getting my pistol, when they saw the van.

A wild animal backed into a corner is deadly, but so is one on the verge of starvation. There were six boys and three girls. They were all dirty, their faces drawn and dark from sleepless nights, lack of food, and probably drug use. They all had weapons, hammers and long wrenches mostly, just things to batter another person with. When they saw us parked behind the diner they knew instantly that we were travelers. It didn’t matter what we had; it was more than they had. And like wild animals they rushed the van.

“Cat!” I said. “Take this!”

She was only half-awake, but took the pistol in both hands. I had just enough time to pull the AR-15 free from its sheath and draw back the charging handle that
